A bit of everything

The last 2 weeks saw a mixture of work being produced. Orlando used chalk to create a Galaxy and even though everything in my house became covered in a thin layer of chalk it was well worth it. The smaller ones had fun making masks and mixing Autumn colors to paint leaves which will then be cut out and stuck onto a tree. We also produced lovely Van Gogh paintings which much to my distraught where lost in transit of camera ;[.

Creating animals

I had acquired quite a few toilet rolls lately so thought the best way to put them to good use was to turn them into giraffes. The task was simple just adding a head and painting everything yellow and sticking on brown squares but the result is a really fun toy for the children to play with long after they have finished the art project.
For the older children we look at Aboriginal art from Australia and tried to re create our own pieces. We worked at mixing different colors to create some more natural shades of brown. Then using cotton buds we started on the dots which form the main part of the painting.

Kandinsky

I wanted the younger children to also have the chance to create a 'master piece' so looking through my art books I came to Kandinsky. His work is abstract and therefor can be copied by young children. The focus of his work was to enable color to express feelings. The children really enjoyed creating the colored circles and then had to focus hard to keep each square a different color.

Animal Crafts

The last 2 weeks we have been making various animals. Last week we made Frog puppets from paper plates. The week before we looked at Safari animals and the children got to make their own Tiger money box using old cereal boxes. Making animal crafts is a good way of teaching children new vocabulary such as face and body parts.

I am happy to also let you know that I have found a new assistant to help with the Wednesday class. Her name is Caro and she is from Venezuela living here in Buenos Aires looking to work as a journalist.

Giacometti

Will the older class I have decided to start looking at various famous artists and seeing if we are able to re- create copies of master works. This week we started with Alberto Giacometti, a sculptor from Switzerland. His sculptures are made from bronze, we made ours using pipe cleaners and tin foil.

Flower Power

We are constantly working on letter recognition with the children so spelling out simple words through art is alway a good way to make learning this fun. Here the children had to spell out Flower and then got to use crate paper to make some flowers. We also looked at African animals this week creating among other things a tiger piggy bank.

A New Term

Welcome back everyone !

After a nice winter break where most of us jetted off to warmer places the time has come to start back up. This term brings us two new students and sadly we had to say goodbye to Alfie who moved back to England. Also my assistant Adriana who has been with us over 6 months headed back home to the states. However the children all seemed excited to see each other again and got straight into making lots of fun things. This last week we looked at numbers and writing our name with cereal ;]
